Baltimore Green Space: A Land Trust for Community-Managed Open Space. Preserving neighborhoods' treasured open spaces

How to Preserve an Open Space

If your neighborhood wants to preserve a community-managed open space, please give us a call at 443-695-7504 or write to info@baltimoregreenspace.org. Please contact us before you complete an application.

We will ask that you fill out an application to help us determine if there is a good match between your project and Baltimore Green Space. Some factors we consider include:

  • how the green space benefits the neighborhood. We look at how the space contributes to community life, and whether it improves the environment.
  • the green space’s long-term viability. One good indicator is whether your site has been managed as green space for some time. We also ask that your project have a community partner, such as a community association, umbrella group, or institution that supports your work.
  • the space’s environmental quality. We research the history to learn about past uses and conduct soil testing. We share the results with you and discuss how to move forward.
  • the owner’s willingness to donate or sell the land. We can purchase land owned by Baltimore City government for $1 per lot. We also accept donations of land. Please talk to us about other situations.

Once Baltimore Green Space agrees to protect an open space, the land trust and its community partners sign an agreement that outlines the roles and responsibilities of each partner in maintaining and preserving the green space.
